Beijing 2001

During summer 2001 my employer sent me to Beijing. Good trip from both work and free time point of view, I had the opportunity to visit all major sights and buy the legendary "I climbed the Great Wall" T-shirt, which was mentioned in the Lonely Planet travel guide. I took a couple of hundred images, and here is a long roll worth of those, that is, the 36 best ones.

Images are taken using Sony DSC-F505 2 megapixel digital camera, then framed and retouched lightly in Photoshop.

There was a great number of Chinese (inner) tourists visiting the sights as well. Many of them had never seen western people live in the streets, not no mention a long haired one like me. I guess I was a sight for the Chinese as well as they were for me... The very first photography situation with the Chinese waving their hands to get a permission for a photograph was a bit of a special occasion, but I soon got used to it. These girls in the image above took first group pictures of themselves with me with all their cameras, and when I did not understand to leave, they continued to take pics with each one together with me. I guess this had been continuing for the rest of the evening with the slowly growing crowd around us. When I saw more people coming from further around, each one digging a camera out of their bags and purses, I decided to leave. Having a photo session with one billion Chinese would have taken a long time.
